Different types of cookies can be distinguished, taking three factors or criteria as a starting point:
- Entity responsible
- Duration / Period
Types of cookies according to the entity responsible for their management:
First party cookies:
Those that are managed by the application editor (e.g.: owner of an application or web page). They enable analytical data, remember language settings and perform other useful functions that help provide a good user experience.
Third party cookies:
They are sent to the user’s terminal equipment, through an equipment or domain not managed by the editor. Therefore, they are those not managed by the editor, but by another entity (e.g.: measurement companies) that processes the data and information obtained through cookies for its own purposes and objectives. The main reference with first party cookies lies in the entity responsible for the use of the user information obtained through these technologies, and whether such use is for the purposes of the application editor or a third party.
Types of cookies according to the period of time that they remain active:
They are designed to collect and store data while the user accesses and uses the application. They are commonly used to store information that is only worth keeping in order to provide the service requested by the user on a single occasion.
The data are still stored in the terminal, and can be accessed and processed during a certain period of time defined by the entity responsible for cookies. This period of time can be extended to a greater or lesser extent (maximum for years).
Types of cookies according to the purpose for which the data or information obtained are processed:
These are those cookies that allow the user to access and use a platform or application, as well as their different functionalities and services, such as controlling data communication, identifying the session, remembering the elements that make up a request or order, implementing registration or participation in an event or survey, enabling dynamic content, or sharing news and images through social networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc. plugin).
They allow the user to access the service with some predefined general characteristics based on a series of criteria of the user’s terminal equipment, for example, the language, the number of results to be displayed, or the appearance of the service depending on the region from where the user accesses the application or service. They allow you to distinguish the experience of a user from that of others.
They allow the entity responsible for their management to monitor and analyze the behavior of the users of the application to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookies is used to measure the activity of the application and contributes to the elaboration of user navigation profiles, in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of the data and information obtained. They also allow you to quantify the impact of advertising spaces or advertisements, as well as to measure activity, number of visits or complementary questions at a statistical and / or quantitative level.
